Federico Gomez lost his qualifying opener at the Indian Wells Masters only two days after very candidly opening up about his mental health, hoping it would help him ease off the burden and feel at least a bit better.
Over the weekend, the world No. 135 shared in a lengthy Instagram post that the last six months have been one of “the toughest” of his career.
Also, the 28-year-old admitted that there have been moments when he would even have suicidal thoughts.
Today, Gomez played in Indian Wells for the first time in his career.
Unfortunately for the Argentine, he didn’t manage to make a winning debut in the desert after American Rudy Quan handed him a 6-4 7-5 defeat in the qualifying first round.
Gomez had a chance to win but missed out on his opportunities
In the first set, the world No. 135 was twice up by a break but failed to capitalize on it as Quan managed to steal the opener.
After losing the first set, the Argentinian tennis player claimed the first break of the set in the ninth game of the second set for a 5-4 lead.
But then, failed to serve out for a decider as Quan got breaks in the 10th and 12th games to overturn the deficit and complete a two-set win.
For Gomez, it was his seventh consecutive defeat in 2025.
“As I said before, it is a huge pain for me to open up in this way but I felt the need to tell you a little bit about my situation. I am still searching for my best self. I will work to find that emotional wellbeing that I once felt,” the 28-year-old said in a message that he shared on Instagram.
Last year, Gomez won three Challenger titles and broke into the top-150 for the first time in his career.
