Will Tiger Woods play golf again this year?

Tiger Woods doesn’t appear to be playing in the Players Championship next week, judging by his recent comments about his current priorities. With the Masters in Augusta just five weeks away, a return for the increasingly under-the-radar 15-time Grand Slam winner could be a personal challenge.

However, Woods is currently putting his game on hold. In a public appearance this week, Tiger cited the recent death of his mother, Kultida, and his work on the PGA Tour’s policy board as reasons he hasn’t had the desire to work on his game lately.

“This is the third time I’ve touched a club since my mother passed away, so I haven’t really gotten into it,” Woods told Sports Illustrated. “My heart is not really in training right now. I’ve had so many other things going on with the Tour and trying to do other things…”

And just then, Tiger opened up the possibility of returning to the links, even if it’s with the sparse regularity of the past few years. “Once I start to probably feel a little bit better and start getting into it, I’ll start looking at the calendar.”

The last official tournament Woods played was a missed cut at the 2024 British Open last July.

Woods, who is still recovering from a car accident in 2021, underwent a sixth back surgery in September. He did not play the Hero World Challenge and then joined his son, Charlie, at the PNC Championship in December.

By Friday, Woods must announce whether or not he plays in the Players Championship next week. If he does, the Masters would be a little closer.

The rules of golf are relatively complicated compared to other sports because they are played outdoors, close to nature and animals. Respecting the rules is a basic element in the game of golf, which, almost always based on self-control and the free conscience of the players, often sees distorted results, sometimes consciously, but often unconsciously or through carelessness, due to the non-observance by many players of the rules of the game. In addition to the rules, golf adheres to a code of conduct, known as etiquette, which generally means playing the game with due respect for the golf course and other players. Etiquette is an essential component of this sport.
