Emma Raducanu has admitted she has low expectations heading into her first grass court event of the season, as she revealed she has an injury worry heading into a vital phase of her year.
Raducanu is closing in on a return to the top 30 of the WTA Rankings after an encouraging clay court season, but she is preparing to play in the HSBC Championships at the Queen’s Club with a major fitness concern.
The 2021 US Open champion suffered a back spasm during her defeat against Danielle Collins in a match in Strasbourg the week before the French Open and that is still troubling her now.
“I have had a small interruption with a back spasm again so that was a bit annoying,” revealed Raducani.
“That kind of hindered my grass prep, but the last few days I have managed to get on the grass and just begin to feel my feet.

“I can’t really predict the future, and how it’s going to be. I know I’ve been managing my back for the last few weeks now.
“It can be frustrating. When I was playing in Strasbourg in my second‑round match it definitely hindered me, and in the first round in Paris when I got through. But I try not to let it get to me. I just have to manage it and take care of it when things happen.
“Overall, I just have to manage what I can take care of and if these things happen, I just need to deal with it and just keep doing the right things.
“But I try not to let it get to me, because I think I have a pretty good feel of when it happens what to do and how to manage it. It does take a few days out, but all I can do is kind of deal with what’s in front of me.”
Despite her injury worry, Raducanu has insisted she is eager to take part in the brand new WTA 500 tournament at the Queen’s Club.
“Of course I want to win this tournament, like every tournament, but especially when it’s at home,” said Raducanu, who will play the Spaniard Cristina Bucsa in the first round on Tuesday.
“My expectations are pretty low, because I played points for the first time today, and I’ve had maybe two or three days on the grass courts, so it’s not been much.”
Raducanu also offered an update on her ever-changing coaching situation, with Mark Petchey set to continue in his part-time role while continuing his commentart career.
She has also confirmed that Nick Cavaday has returned to her coaching set-up, after he left her camp following the Australian Open in January due to ill health.
“I’m happy to see him healthy, first of all,” stated Raducanu.
“I mean, it’s been such a long time since we were last on court together in Australia, and Mark is in Paris commentating, so Nick was around and it was nice to just have a few days with him.
“They’ll both be helping me throughout the grass [season].
“I think having Mark and Nick, both people who have banks of experience and I think they can complement each other really well and I trust both of them a lot.
“So that is a big fundamental for me. So I’m looking forward to this upcoming season and seeing how it goes.”
