Kontaveit retired after Wimbledon 2023. Last year, the Estonian tennis player wanted to communicate her painful decision via social media, which came after a long ordeal dictated by physical problems. The native of Tallinn has won six WTA titles in her career out of fifteen finals played.

Her best result in Grand Slam tournaments is a quarterfinal at the 2020 Australian Open. For her country, which does not have a great tennis tradition, Anett was certainly the leading figure, having achieved several career records, first of all the 2nd position in the WTA ranking, in June 2022.

She was also the first tennis player from her country to qualify for the WTA Finals, reaching the final at the same time. Her last year, with the intensification of the back problem, was lean in results and led her to make this tough decision, at just 27 years old.

“Hello friends, today I announce that I am ending my career as a competitive athlete. After several medical visits and consultations with my medical staff, I was informed that I have a lumbar disc degeneration in my back. This does not allow me to train at full speed or continue competing. Therefore, it is impossible to continue at the highest level in such a highly competitive field. Tennis has given and taught me a lot, and I am very grateful for that. It was important for me to carry the Estonian flag on the tennis courts and to be able to play in front of my fans and fans from all over the world. After the last effort as a professional tennis player, I am ready for new challenges: to enjoy the game and compete as much as possible at Wimbledon. Thank you all for your continued support,” she wrote on Instagram.
