Coco Gauff, currently ranked world number six, has ended her partnership with coach Brad Gilbert, just weeks after her unsuccessful US Open title defense. The 20-year-old American star, who won her first Grand Slam under Gilbert’s guidance last year, suffered a fourth-round defeat to compatriot Emma Navarro at this year’s tournament, prompting the decision to part ways.
Gilbert, a highly experienced coach who has worked with tennis greats such as Andre Agassi, Andy Murray, and Andy Roddick, expressed his appreciation for the journey he shared with Gauff. On social media, he stated, “Coco, at just 20 years young, your future is incredibly bright, and I wish you nothing but continued success ahead.” He also hinted at new coaching opportunities in the future, saying he was excited about the next chapter in his career.
Gauff initially brought Gilbert on board following a disappointing first-round exit at Wimbledon last year. This collaboration, along with Spanish coach Pere Riba, sparked a remarkable turnaround in her performance. Gauff won 18 of her 19 matches during the U.S. hardcourt swing, which included titles in Washington and Cincinnati, culminating in her career-best achievement – winning the 2023 US Open, where she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
Following this strong run, Gauff hasn’t reached a final since winning Auckland in January and her performance took a downturn in recent months. Signs of tension between Gauff and Gilbert became evident during Wimbledon, where she was visibly frustrated with her coach during her fourth-round loss to Navarro. Riba had previously left the team in November 2023, leaving Gilbert as Gauff’s main coach.
Early exits from tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati, combined with her defeat in the US Open, raised concerns about her form. During this period, she faced struggles with her serve and forehand, notably hitting 19 double faults in her match against Navarro.
While the end of their partnership marks the close of a significant chapter in Gauff’s career, the tennis world remains optimistic about her future. With her raw talent and determination, she is expected to remain a dominant force on the tour as she continues to refine her game and pursue more major titles. (source: BBC)
