Bale, handicap 2, will be accompanied by other famous athletes such as the charismatic NFL quarterback John Elway, winner of two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos; Ruud Gullit or the surfing legend Kelly Slater. Among the professionals who will play in the tournament, the presence of Matt Fitzpatrick, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry stands out.
The former Real Madrid striker, a passionate fan of this sport, already shone in 2023 at the Pebble Beach AT&T, the other major tournament held under this format in the world, which counts towards the PGA Tour. Days before this event, the Welshman’s performance with the clubs made Rahm praise him. “I told Gareth ‘you can’t be so good in professional football and golf at the same time, it doesn’t seem fair to me,” he said.
Winner of three leagues and five Champions with Real Madrid, Bale has never hidden his passion for golf, to the point of building three golf holes at home simulating the 12th at Augusta, the postage stamp at Troon and the 17th at Sawgrass, surely the three most famous par 3s on the planet.
The Dunhill Links is a tournament that counts towards the DP World Tour in which a professional and an amateur form a team for the first three days in rotation through the three courses. The top 60 professionals and the top 20 duos will compete again on Sunday in the cradle of golf at St. Andrews.
The rules of golf are relatively complicated compared to other sports because they are played outdoors, close to nature and animals. Respecting the rules is a basic element in the game of golf, which, almost always based on self-control and the free conscience of the players, often sees distorted results, sometimes consciously, but often unconsciously or through carelessness, due to the failure of many players to comply with the rules of the game. In addition to the rules, golf adheres to a code of conduct, known as etiquette, which generally means playing the game with due respect for the golf course and other players. Etiquette is an essential component of this sport.
