Sharpening Carlos Alcaraz: Ferrero details plan to minimize ups and downs

For the first time in three years, Carlos Alcaraz did not finish the season in the top-2. The Spaniard wrapped up the 2024 season behind Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev despite conquering two Major crowns!

Carlos is the four-time Major winner at 21, but he wants more! Juan Carlos Ferrero, Alcaraz’s coach, revealed the things they worked on during the off-season, preparing the Spaniard for another strong run in 2025.

Ferrero admitted there’s plenty of room for improvements in the young gun’s game. Firstly, they worked on his concentration dips, an element that cost him more good results in the season behind us. Carlos claimed three wins over Jannik Sinner in 2024.

However, he could not mirror the Italian’s consistency, playing too many loose shots and falling in the matches he should have won. When Carlos smiles and hits incredible shots, it’s almost impossible to beat him. Still, we often did not see that level from him in the season behind us.

Ferrero and the rest of Alcaraz’s team want to change that ahead of 2025. The young gun will present his improvements at the Australian Open, hoping to accomplish a Career Grand Slam at 21! The Spaniard has yet to show his A-game in Melbourne.

He reached the quarter-final a year ago and fell to Alexander Zverev after losing ground in the early stages of the duel. The young gun claimed his first ATP title of 2024 in Indian Wells after beating Zverev, Sinner and Medvedev.

He fell to Grigor Dimitrov in Miami and struggled with an arm injury at the beginning of the clay swing. However, the Spaniard recovered by Roland Garros and lifted his first trophy in Paris over Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev.

Alcaraz trailed two sets to one in both duels before raising his level in the fourth and fifth, lifting a trophy and claiming his third Major crown. The young gun entered Wimbledon as the defending champion, hoping to mirror the 2023 success.

Despite not playing at his best, Carlos reached the final and arranged the clash against Novak Djokovic. The young gun ousted the veteran 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 in two hours and 27 minutes, defending the Wimbledon crown at 21!

Alcaraz could not repeat that pace for the rest of the season. He suffered an early US Open loss before conquering his fourth and last title of the season in Beijing following an epic win over Jannik Sinner.

The Spaniard failed to reach the semi-final in Shanghai, Paris and London, struggling in indoor conditions and preparing for a better run in 2025.

“We have worked on many things during the off-season. Carlos is still very young, with a lot of room for improvement. His concentration should be more stable because he often has ups and downs. We are aware of that problem and have worked hard to find the solution. We want to see Carlos play good tennis in 2025,” Juan Carlos Ferrero said.
