Nick Kyrgios risks having to miss the Australian Open 2025 – which will start on Sunday 12 January – due to a new physical problem.
The Australian tennis player has communicated to fans, through an Instagram story, how he is struggling with another type of injury that is quite serious and will have to be monitored in the coming days.
“I had an ultrasound of my abdomen and it was detected a first degree strain. I will rest and do everything possible to be ok in Melbourne,” wrote the former Wimbledon Championships finalist.
The 29-year-old has made official his withdrawal from an exhibition match scheduled at Rod Laver Arena, writing: “Unfortunately I will not be able to play with my good friend Novak Djokovic this Thursday.”
A bad blow for the Australian player, who continues to be haunted by physical problems: his participation in the first Slam tournament of the season was already in doubt following a wrist that was not at its best during his debut in Brisbane, both in singles and doubles.

Nick had also set another appointment in his schedule after the 2025 edition of the Australian Open. Captain Lleyton Hewitt called him up to be in the team that will play the first round of the Davis Cup (away with Sweden). The former world number 1 considered him a precious pawn especially to further unite and reunite the group, also formed by Alex de Minaur, Jordan Thompson, Thanasi Kokkinakis. Furthermore, Kyrgios could be used especially in doubles with his compatriot friend Kokkinakis: the two won the Australian Major in 2022. Everything, now, is in doubt due to the poor conditions of the athlete from Canberra.
Nick – as mentioned – made his return to the Tour after 18 long months of stoppage from competitions. For him, the return to the court was bittersweet. The defeat in his debut at the Brisbane International against one of the fastest growing tennis players – Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard – cannot be read as a debacle. Especially considering the fact that the tennis player born in Canberra surrendered only after three hard-fought tie-breaks in the third set.
What casts more doubt on the future of the 29-year-old is his physical condition. The former Wimbledon finalist once again suffered problems during the challenge, bandaging it on one occasion due to the discomfort he was feeling. A rather significant alarm in view of the most anticipated commitment by the boy.
“I’m really super excited about the idea of playing the Australian Open. If I’m ready to play I will. But today I also faced reality.” My wrist will never be the same again. But I can do it, it all depends on how much pain I want to endure. Thiem and del Potro understand my pain. I will do my best, but the level is still high. I no longer have the goal of being happy, I just go with the flow and try to be as balanced as possible,” said the Australian at the press conference.
