Coco Gauff has already reached the 2nd round of the Australian Open 2025 by defeating countrywoman and 2020 champion Sofia Kenin, in straight sets, with a double 6-3, 6-3.
Coco also avenged the defeat suffered at Wimbledon in 2023 against Sofia, in what was perhaps one of the worst moments of the young American’s career.
“It was a difficult match for me today. I knew it was going to be difficult, but I’m happy with the way I played. Maybe I could have served some second serves better, but I’m just happy that I was able to handle the situation today,” she said in the on-court interview.

Speaking of other matches, the number 7 seed Jessica Pegula defeated the home wild card Maya Joint 6-3, 6-0. Marta Kostyuk also won, beating the practiced Nao Hibino in a comeback. Jelena Ostapenko was out, knocked out in the challenge against Belinda Bencic. Doubles 6-1 for Karolina Muchova against Nadia Podoroska.
In the men’s singles, Carlos Alcaraz’s journey in Melbourne started in the best possible way. The Spaniard was the author of a great performance, overwhelming Alexander Shevchenko with the score of 6-1, 7-5, 6-1. Carlitos only suffered in the central part of the second set, but when he had to raise the level and maintain high concentration he did not disappoint. His next rival will be the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka.
Two important fifth-set victories for Frances Tiafoe and Jack Draper, both looking to confirm their 2025 form. The American nearly ruined a two-set lead against Arthur Rinderknech, while the British player came from behind to defeat Mariano Navone 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The two Australian tennis players Jordan Thompson and Thanasi Kokkinakis advanced.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Sebastian Korda also reached the second round, defeating Jan-Lennard Struff and Lukas Klein in four sets, respectively. Jannik Sinner also discovered the name of the opponent he will face to try to reach the third round: it is the wild card Tristan Schoolkate.
