Watch: Eva Lys left in disbelief after told how much she earned at Australian Open

Eva Lys was left stunned and in disbelief after being told how much money she made by reaching the Australian Open round-of-16.

Anyone who has been following this year’s Happy Slam edition knows that the 128th-ranked German’s run will be remembered as one of the best stories of this year’s tournament.

After just barely making the main draw as a lucky loser, she went on to make her first Grand Slam round-of-16 – secure breaking into the top-100 for the first time in her career – but also make Australian Open history by becoming the first lucky loser since 1988 to reach the second week.

Also, Lys secured the biggest payday of her career.

Entering the Australian Open, the 23-year-old had collected $798k in prize money in her career.

Now, that number is set to go over a million after she pocketed $420k with her Melbourne run.

Lys left in disbelief: I’ve never even heard of that number in my life

In a video shot for the tournament, an interviewer is telling the new top-100 player that she collected $420k for making the round-of-16.

The German tennis star put her hands to her face and reacted in absolute disbelief.

“Did you not know that?” the interviewer asked.

Lys responded: “Because I never went that far in a tournament… That’s insane, that’s a number I have never even heard in my life.”

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old’s dream run ended on Monday following a straight-set defeat to Iga Swiatek.

But the German was all smiles in her post-match presser and she described her week in Melbourne as “the nicest” of her life.

“It’s definitely I think the nicest week I’ve had in my life just because it wasn’t really only about the result, but also about the whole story,” Lys said.
