Rory McIlroy suggests cutting down on tournaments to reignite fan interest

The future of golf is always an interesting topic. While most are not quite happy with the current state of the sport, it is clear that the future could bring some changes.

Rory McIlroy, one of the main faces of the sport, gave his opinion a few days ago, putting an accent on ‘too many tournaments’.

The Northern Irish golfer is someone who wants to reduce the number of PGA Tour tournaments, believing that it would awaken the interest factor among fans of the sport.

“I think it already has been diminished,” McIlroy said as quoted by Irish Independent.

“I can see when the golf consumer might get a little fatigued of everything that’s sort of available to them.

So to scale it back a little bit and maybe have a little more scarcity in some of the stuff that we do, like the NFL, I think might not be a bad thing. I think 47 or 50 tournaments a year is definitely too many.”

In other sports, a lot is also changing on this front, but do the leaders of golf organizations have the same mindset?

Rory McIlroy: Hopefully people find that entertaining

The 35-year-old golfer explained that professional golfers play to win, but of course, the excitement factor has to be there, given that it attracts fans. However, a large number of tournaments could limit the interest of fans, especially the younger audience, who get fed up quickly.

“First and foremost we are professional golfers – we want to go out there and shoot the best score possible that we can and try to beat each other.

Hopefully people find that entertaining, and if not, then I don’t know what to tell them.” McIlroy continued.

The world number three is often a vocal voice regarding changes in the golf scene, but also the existing situation, believing that it is necessary to make moves that would take this sport in the right direction. The creation of TGL, together with Tiger Woods, speaks volumes about how hungry Rory is for novelty and excitement factor.
