Nick Kyrgios reveals he played through a 4-centimeter abdominal tear during the Australian Open but hopes to recover well during February and be able to return to action at the Indian Wells Masters in early March.
In the first week of 2025, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist launched his post-wrist surgery comeback and played his first match in 18 months.
After losing to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a three-set Brisbane thriller, the Australian said he was feeling pain in his wrist.
A couple of days later, Kyrgios shared that he contracted an abdominal issue.
While he managed to compete at the Australian Open, it didn’t go well since he lost in straight sets to Jacob Fearnley in singles while his doubles run with Thanasi Kokkinakis ended in the first round via Kokkinakis’ retirement.
“To my fans! Appreciate all the support – I will be back home training with my next event being Indian Wells,” the 29-year-old wrote in an update posted on his Instagram Story.
“Was bad timing as I was battling through a 4cm abdominal tear/strain at the Australian Open. I will be doing everything I can to rehab and prepare for the next events.”
Kyrgios admitted he didn’t enjoy his time on the court
After battling pain and abdominal issues, the former world No. 13 kept it straight honest and admitted that it was all but an enjoyable experience for him
“It’s not enjoyable to go out there and not think tactically and not think I’m enjoying the atmosphere, or where am I going to hit this ball,” the Australian tennis star said in Melbourne.
“It’s like: ‘What am I doing to manage my body? This is painful. OK, I can’t do this because this hurts.’ That’s not tennis to me, that’s not sport.’”
After his Australian Open singles exit, Kyrgios also indicated that he probably wouldn’t return next year.
But for now, the hope is that he can properly resolve the abdominal injury and play during the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami.
