Holger Rune explains why he won’t change his game despite lack of progress, results

Holger Rune doesn’t necessarily agree that he should change some things in his game as the 21-year-old thinks he just needs to work on crafting the weapons he already has and “maximizing” his potential.

After winning the Paris Masters in late 2022 and breaking into the top-10, the Dane’s next goals were to win a Grand Slam and attack the top spot.

While he managed to do some notable things in the first part of 2023, he hasn’t had much success on the Slam or Masters level in the last year and a half.- and not only that – but he hasn’t won a title since winning the ATP 250 tournament in Munich in 2023 April.

So far this year, Rune is just 3-2 after losing to Jiri Lehecka in the Brisbane first round before also picking up an Australian Open round-of-16 defeat to Jannik Sinner.

Now, the Danish tennis player is ranked at No. 12 and not really regarded as a contender for the biggest titles.

And since his progression over the last few years hasn’t gone as planned, he was asked by Danish reporters ahead of this week’s Davis Cup action whether he needed to change something.

Rune: I don’t think I need to change anything in my game, look at the Alexander Zverev example

“I don’t think I need to change anything in my game. You look at Zverev and he has improved a lot lately. Before his injury he was a consistent top-five player, but today he has already improved and is a contender for the Grand Slams this year,” the 2022 Paris Masters champion explained.

“That’s what I want to do. My next step is not to win a particular tournament, but to maximize my potential. If I can do that, I can win big matches and tournaments.”

In his interview, Rune admitted that he probably didn’t work as hard as he should have in the last few years.

But then, also claimed that he is now working as hard as ever and remains optimistic and confident that good things will come.

This week, Denmark is hosting Serbia in a Davis Cup qualifiers tie.
