Anastasia Potapova sheds lights on divorce from Alexander Shevchenko: Had problems

Anastasia Potapova is opening up about her divorce from Alexander Shevchenko as the Russian admitted that there were “problems” that they unfortunately couldn’t resolve as a couple.

In 2022, the 33rd-ranked WTA star and the ATP world No. 75 started dating and it didn’t take long before they became one of the most popular tennis couples on the Tour.

Already in 2023 September, the 24-year-old Kazakh player proposed to the 23-year-old and she said yes.

Shortly after the engagement, the wedding also came as Potapova and Shevchenko tied the knot in December of that year.

But during the summer, fans noticed that the WTA star removed their photos from her Instagram account and that she also wasn’t following him anymore on social media.

And in November, the Russian confirmed the split through a social media announcement.

“I made some shockingly big decisions at the end of the year,” she told Russian tennis journalist Sofya Tartakova.

“But like I mentioned, that’s life. Unfortunately, things like that happen and you have to accept it. Of course, I’m very disappointed it all went the way it did.”

Potapova: We had problems but I wish Shevchenko all the best

“I really wish Sasha—I can say it on camera, I’m not ashamed of these words—I really wish him all the best, and he deserves all the best,” the 23-year-old noted.

“I wish him all the best with his career, as well, because he’s very talented and he has to keep working and developing as a player.

“But I guess we had problems; some couples get over these problems, and some don’t. Unfortunately, we were one of the couples that didn’t.”

Meanwhile, Potapova is 5-2 to start the 2025 season.

This week, she is playing at the WTA 500 tournament in Linz, where she meets Karolina Muchova today in the quarterfinal.

Previously, the Russian reached the Brisbane round-of-16 and exited the Australian Open in the second round.
