Singapore: Anna Kalinskaya’s bad luck in 2025 continues, forced to retire again in SF

Anna Kalinskaya’s promising Singapore run ended in an unfortunate way after the No. 1 seed was forced to retire in her semifinal match due to injury.

On Saturday, the top seed and world No. 85 Ann Li went toe-to-toe in the opening set of their match.

After the unseeded American won the first set through a tie-break 7-6 (2), the Russian tennis star called for a medical timeout.

On the court, Kalinskaya received treatment on her right thigh and continued the match after being visited by the physio.

But after getting broken in the first game of the second set and falling down by a set and a break, she retired from the match.

Earlier this week, the Russian also received medical intervention during her opening win versus Caroline Dolehide.

On Friday, the top seed also had a medical timeout during her quarterfinal meeting against Mananchaya Sawangkaew.

Kalinskaya’s rough start to 2025 continues

In her opening match of 2025, the world No. 18 suffered a first-round loss to Ashlyn Krueger in Brisbane.

The following week, the 26-year-old was forced to retire against Belinda Bencic in her Adelaide opener due to illness.

Then, she wasn’t even able to compete at the Australian Open due to illness.

This week, Kalinskaya returned to action hoping it would go without issues.

Unfortunately for her, that wasn’t the case as she was once again forced to retire.

Meanwhile, Li will face in the final the winner of the match between Elise Mertens and Xinyu Wang.

Before the Kalinskaya match, the American clinched three straight-set wins so she will enter the Singapore final without a lost set.
