Holger Rune’s run in the prestigious Rotterdam ATP 500 ended against Pedro Martinez in the quarterfinals. The young Dane – who had defeated Lorenzo Sonego in the previous round in a match that ended at night – decided to play against the Spanish ace despite a very hard night due to fever.
Everyone noticed the difficulties of Rune, who tried to shorten the points but had no chance against an opponent who was able to take advantage of this concrete opportunity to access the quarterfinals.
Fans and tournament organizers were hoping to see an intriguing match between Rune and Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals, but there will be a Spanish derby between the former world number 1 and Martinez to decide who will reach the semi-finals.
The 2022 Rolex Paris Masters champion greeted the Netherlands with some regrets, as they were playing great tennis and looked like they could achieve a prestigious result. Through his official X profile, Holger provided an update on his health and thanked the Dutch fans for their wonderful welcome.
Tough night. Did my best but couldn’t fight my fever down. Hope to be fresh soon. Thank you Holland for your support 🙏🏼 🇳🇱 pic.twitter.com/sUePQ6RAiw

Rune’s next tournament should be Acapulco, in the hope that he will be able to regain his best form in time for the start of the tournament.
Rune is working hard
The former Top 5 is working very hard together with his team to shine again and the start of the new season has been convincing in several ways. He reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open, where he was defeated in four sets by current world number 1 Jannik Sinner.
The Dane needs time to regain his certainties and become the player everyone expects, being endowed with a really remarkable potential.
On the latest edition of his podcast, former world number 1 Andy Roddick spoke about Rune’s current status: “Alcaraz and Sinner are seemingly going to be all-time greats, and Holger Rune is still trying to find, one, a coach that he can have a relationship with for more than four or five months at a time.
He’s beaten the best players in the world, including Novak Djokovic a couple of times when Djokovic was at his best. So, a lot to like with Holger Rune, but also a lot of inconsistency.”
