‘A cute 40-year-old body’: Novak Djokovic’s push for 25th Major

Novak Djokovic is ready to chase more big titles in 2025! The Serb will start the season in Brisbane next week, facing Rinky Hijikata in the first round. It will be Djokovic’s first official match since October, closing the 2024 season earlier and recharging batteries.

The Serb claimed an elusive Olympic Games gold medal in Paris last August, completing all 15 notable tennis trophies and writing history books. Novak is ready to chase Major crowns in 2025, seeking the 25th trophy against the much younger opponents.

Djokovic will increase the number of tournaments in the season ahead of us, feeling motivated to perform at his best at all four Majors. However, the former WTA top-10, Andrea Petkovic, has a different theory!

In Petkovic’s opinion, Novak will throw everything at two events in 2025, targeting the Australian Open and Wimbledon as his most desired events! Andrea could be right, as Novak’s numbers justify her prediction.

Djokovic’s 17 of 24 Major titles came in Melbourne and London. He was competitive at both events in 2024, falling to Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open semi-final and losing the Wimbledon title match to Carlos Alcaraz.

Novak had a brilliant run at Majors in 2023, winning three titles from four finals and cementing the GOAT status! The legend could not extend that streak in the season behind us, reaching one Major final and missing the title.

Djokovic advanced to his 11th Australian Open semi-final in January, never losing after the quarter-final stage at the first Major of the season! However, Jannik Sinner changed that in style, toppling the Serb in four sets and ending his title defense hopes.

The Italian kept the Serb away from break points, becoming the first player to achieve that against Novak in completed matches at Majors! Sinner stormed over Djokovic in the opening two sets and built a massive advantage.

The veteran raised his level in the third set. He denied a match point in the tie break and stole it 8-6 for more drama. However, Jannik kept his composure and sealed the deal with a fine performance in the fourth set.

After the Australian Open, the Serb lost the Roland Garros crown. This time, he could not fight for it despite reaching the quarter-final. Novak injured his right knee and made it worse following two five-setter wins over Lorenzo Musetti and Francisco Cerundolo.

Djokovic survived those challenges but decided to end his campaign, withdrawing ahead of the quarter-final duel with Casper Ruud. Novak underwent surgery on June 5, hoping to recover for Wimbledon and the Olympic Games.

Despite dark predictions, Djokovic placed a protection on his right knee and defeated five rivals at Wimbledon en route to the final! The veteran passed Holger Rune and Lorenzo Musetti, arranging the title clash with Carlos Alcaraz like a year ago.

The young gun toppled the veteran 6-2, 6-2, 7-6, defending the title and leaving Novak empty-handed. Carlos took charge in the opening two sets, dominating on serve and return and building a massive advantage in no time.

Alcaraz secured another break in the ninth game of the third set and served for the title at 5-4. However, Djokovic secured his only break to level the score and extend the battle. However, Carlos claimed the tie break and sealed the deal in style.

Novak threw everything at the Olympic Games in Paris. Chasing the elusive gold medal, the veteran defeated six rivals in straight sets and wrote history books. He met Alcaraz in the final and stood as an underdog.

Djokovic turned the tables and delivered a 7-6, 7-6 victory in two hours and 52 minutes, celebrating one of the most cherished titles of his career. The Serb achieved his goal and slowed down his engines, playing only two tournaments by the end of the season.

The defending champion struggled with his initial shot at the US Open. He passed two obstacles before falling to Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in three hours and 19 minutes. They met at Majors for the third time in 2024.

The Aussie scored his first victory, reaching the last 16 on the notable scene for the first time. Popyrin outplayed Djokovic at Arthur Ashe Stadium, winning three points more and taking charge in the pivotal moments en route to a career-best victory.

Novak plagued his chances after landing 14 double faults. Alexei went for his shots and fired 50 winners and unforced errors. The veteran had an opportunity to prolong the battle. He created 16 break chances and seized only four, three in the third set!

The Aussie converted five of 12 chances, recovering after the third set and sealing the deal with a strong performance early in the fourth.

“I believe Novak will throw everything at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. He will not care about other events, and we will see him making a massive push at those two Majors with his cute 40-year-old body. Novak will try everything to grab the 25th Major in Melbourne or London,” Andrea Petkovic said.
