Alexander Bublik: Daniil Medvedev ‘owns’ me but Alexander Zverev is my guy

Alexander Bublik admits Daniil Medvedev has been an absolute menace to him on the court but adds that Alexander Zverev is a matchup he likes very much.

The Kazakh, ranked at No. 33 in the world, has faced the 2021 US Open champion six times so far in his career and has as many losses. Not only that the 27-year-old never clinched a win against the Russian, but he also managed to just take one set in those six meetings – it happened in their 2021 Toronto Masters second round match.

While Bublik has struggled mightily against Medvedev, he has had lots of success versus another top player – world No. 2 Zverev. In their four meetings, the former world No. 17 earned three wins and lost only once – that only loss came at the Monte Carlo Masters on his least favorite surface, clay. And even there, the Kazakh was up by a set before the two-time Grand Slam finalist managed to come back and win in three sets.

Impressively, two of those wins came in the 2022 Montpellier final and the 2023 Halle final, respectively.

Bublik: Medvedev owns me but Zverev is my guy…

Recently, retired American players John Isner, Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson launched a podcast. During his appearance there, the Kazakh four-time ATP champion was asked to reveal the player he “really disliked playing against.”

“I think Medvedev owns me big time. Like big time. I’m not sure if I will ever beat him but I mean I don’t know why it’s been like this since the juniors. I think I’ve never won a match against him. I think Sascha is my guy. I’m leading 4-1, I think. The most enjoyable guy I ever played with in my life. I love playing Sascha. I don’t know why I have such a great feeling towards him and every time I play and I play well, even he’s laughing all the time when, you know, I’m showing up late or doing some things, he’s like, ‘Okay, but still you’re going to beat me.’ I guess we have this mutual joke that is coming out. But Daniil owns me for sure. Big time,” Bublik said on the Nothing Major Podcast.

This year, Bublik played against Medvedev at the Madrid Masters while he didn’t get a chance to meet Zverev.
