Alexander Zverev joins particular list after 2025 Australian Open final

Alexander Zverev is not ready to win the first Grand Slam title of his career. The German champion played an excellent Australian Open and had given the feeling that he could win the tournament at one point, but the result of the final against Jannik Sinner leaves no room for doubt.

Despite being very fresh from a physical point of view – having played only one set against Novak Djokovic in the semifinals due to the withdrawal of the Serbian legend – the world number 2 never gave the feeling of being able to defeat the Italian ace, who did not give him any break and prevailed in three sets by a large margin.

The second set was certainly the most balanced and ended in a tiebreak, where the 23-year-old from Sesto Pusteria was slightly lucky but had more courage in the decisive moments. The 3-time Grand Slam champion proved to be more complete than Sascha from all points of view and the German was visibly heartbroken at the end of the challenge.

Zverev still needs to work

The champion from Hamburg hoped that the progresses made in recent months would be enough to achieve his biggest dream, but he will have to wait a little longer to lift a trophy of such prestige.

Sascha cried during the ceremony after the match, but everyone’s hope is that he will react immediately and show up at the French Open even more ambitious.

Meanwhile, Zverev became the sixth player in tennis history to have lost his first three Grand Slam finals played. Prior to the 2025 AO final, Sascha had been defeated by Dominic Thiem in the 2020 US Open final and Carlos Alcaraz in the 2024 French Open final.

In this particular list – in addition to Sascha – there are also Andre Agassi, Goran Ivanisevic, Andy Murray, Dominic Thiem and Casper Ruud.

Among these players, only Zverev and Ruud have not won any Major titles but they are both active and have time to make their dream come true.
