Alexander Zverev makes huge change to win a Major title

Alexander Zverev will have huge pressure in 2025, as everyone expects him to finally win a Grand Slam title by breaking the curse that has plagued him since the beginning of his career. Almost no one thought that the German was still at zero Major titles at the end of 2024 and Sascha struggled a lot to live with this thought, often ending up making the wrong choices in the decisive moments of the most important matches.

The world number 2 has played very well in 2024, has been consistent throughout the year and has received as a reward the overtaking of Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP ranking thanks to his triumph at the Rolex Paris Masters. The champion from Hamburg also won the Rome Masters 1000 during the spring, results not a foregone conclusion for a player who had suffered a very serious ankle injury at the 2022 French Open.

Sascha has definitely returned to the highest level, but he has once again lacked the spark in Grand Slam tournaments. Zverev had several chances last season, such as in the Roland Garros final, in which he was unable to convert a two-set lead to one against Alcaraz (losing in five sets).

Alexander also felt the weight of pressure at the Australian Open and US Open. In Melbourne he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals wasting several chances, while in New York he stopped against Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals despite the premature eliminations of Novak Djokovic and Carlitos Alcaraz.

In any case, Sascha finished the season in second place in the ATP ranking behind only Jannik Sinner. The world number 2 chose to skip the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga last November to start preparing for the new season right away.

Zverev has already started the new season

Zverev’s 2025 has already begun, as the German is playing in the United Cup. The 2024 French Open finalist made his debut against Thiago Monteiro by winning in straight sets.

During the press conference, the German star revealed a huge chance in his team: “I’m back with Jez Green, I worked with him for seven years, and we kind of had a split for three years, and we’re back together. So, for me the physical aspect probably was the most important of the off-season for sure. I feel like I’ve lost one or two matches last year because I got tired, which I don’t want to happen this year.”

He also commented on his 2024 season: “They were big matches. They were maybe the Australian Open with Daniil, where I was a bit sick, actually, I was playing with fever there, and then there was at the French Open with Carlos where I got tired. And again, I don’t want that to happen again, so, yeah, a lot of hard work on that aspect. I think the tennis will maybe take longer time to adjust this year than it was maybe last year.

I had a very stable season, except for the few tournaments where I had real physical problems. I was one set away from winning Roland Garros. I still think, and I stand by it that I played my best tennis at Wimbledon this year, for the first time in my career.

I have never played as well on grass as I did before my injury. That was very, very bitter for me because I really saw the opportunities for the first time in my life on grass. I won two Masters titles, I played big finals, but at the end of the day, I want to go one step further.”

A really important year

The German ace knows that 2025 could be one of the most important years of his career and is very happy to have made his debut with a win at the United Cup.

“I’m very happy to be back playing for Team Germany again,” Zverev stated. “Perth is one of my favourite cities in Australia… and I’m enjoying my time on the court.

I think this is the first time we’ve been up 2-0 in a tie. Last year we were playing a deciding match every single time so it’s nice to know that we’ve got this one in the bag already” – he added.

The four Grand Slam tournaments will be Sascha’s main goals in 2025 and the coming years. The current world number 2 has the skills to win on all surfaces, but he will not have to be afraid in the important moments as has happened so many times so far. The champion from Hamburg seems calmer and more confident than in the past, as well as having a more aggressive attitude on court.
