One of the most interesting topics in this start of 2025 is certainly the rise of Joao Fonseca. The young Brazilian ace is continuing to impress everyone with his brilliant performances and had defeated a Top 10 player like Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open, leaving the whole world speechless.
In recent months, Fonseca has improved in all respects and confirmed this in Buenos Aires last week by winning his first ATP title at just 18 years old.
Joao is really very complete and has a power from the baseline that recalls that of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who have taken control of the men’s tour in the last twelve months.
The current world number 68 knows that he has to keep working to become a top player and has surrounded himself with the right people for his future, although he will have to start managing a really huge pressure coming from the constant comparison with Gustavo Kuerten.
Petkovic opens up on Fonseca
On the latest edition of the ‘Tennis Channel Live Podcast’, former WTA star Andrea Petkovic predicted which Fonseca’s position in the ATP ranking will be at the end of the 2025 season: “I think he is going to end in the top 20. I hope for him he will have a slow and steady rise because that will bode well for the next 15 years instead of a quick rise which would be great for tennis.
But for him personally I hope that it is a slow and steady rise. And nobody wants to see him unseeded in a major tournament even close to their section. That’s terrible, right? If you see Fonseca at 68!”
The young Brazilian talent does not have much time to enjoy the triumph in Argentina, as he will play the Rio Open this week.
Joao – who had become famous all over the world exactly a year ago by reaching the quarterfinals in Rio – will face the French ace Alexandre Muller in his debut.
