Andrey Rublev admits that he acts like a child sometimes

Andrey Rublev is trying to grow both on and off the court and improve those weaknesses that make him too unstable again. The last year has not been easy for the Russian ace, who has had to fight against his demons and who has suffered from depression by his own admission.

His results on the tennis court have been very fluctuating, with the victory at the Mutua Madrid Open in spring 2024 that seemed to have given him back confidence. However, the following months were even harder for the champion from Moscow who expressed all his frustration at times with episodes of self-harm.

The current world number 10 has not started the new season brilliantly, but he finally seems calmer and is intent on overcoming this crisis in the coming months.

Rublev reflects on his journey

Rublev will make his debut in Doha against Alexander Bublik tomorrow and will try to get as far as possible in this prestigious ATP 500, in which there is no Jannik Sinner due to the three-month suspension resulting from his agreement with WADA.

During his pre-tournament press conference, the Russian player – who has been playing in the Top 10 for four years – analyzed his journey on the ATP tour so far: “It’s not a trivial achievement to get into the Top 10 of the ATP rankings and I’m proud of that.

The first two years I often thought that I was lucky, that I had found a good moment and that I had made it into the Top 10 because other players had been injured.

After the third year, I started to think that I wasn’t that bad. Now I have even more confidence and I know that I was good, luck has nothing to do with it. I have achieved one of my biggest goals, but I want to continue to learn from my mistakes. Although I’ve been in the Top 10 for four years, I still act like a kid on the court at times.

If I can work on some of my weaknesses, I can do even better in the coming years.”
