ATP Indian Wells: Stefanos Tsitsipas extends his winning streak

Stefanos Tsitsipas passed the first obstacle at the Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells. The 8th seed defeated Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 27 minutes, extending his winning streak following the Dubai Open crown.

The Greek led 6-2, 5-4 in 65 minutes before they embraced a 20-minute tenth game. The favorite converted his sixth match point and moved into the next round. Stefanos claimed 16 points more than Thiago, serving well and keeping the pressure on the other side. 

Tsitsipas dropped 11 points in nine service games and defended two break points in the first game of the encounter. The 8th seed grabbed 42% of the return points and secured three breaks from eight opportunities. 

Stefanos fired 28 winners and 16 unforced errors. Seyboth Wild landed 12 direct points and 25 mistakes, mostly from his forehand. The Brazilian hit more service winners, and the Greek responded with more efficient numbers from the baseline and at the net.

Tsitsipas faced two break points in the first game of the match. He denied them and avoided an early setback. The 8th seed drew the rival’s mistake in the second game, earning a break and moving 2-0 in front. Stefanos fired a forehand winner in the third game for 3-0 in 11 minutes.

The Greek provided two more fine holds in games five and seven and made another push on the return at 5-2. The Brazilian squandered three game points and played a wayward forehand to drop serve and hand the opener to his rival in 33 minutes. 

Seyboth Wild raised his level in the second set and followed the pace of the favorite. Thiago closed the eighth game with a service winner for 4-4 and more drama. Stefanos responded with a service winner in game nine and made the ultimate push at 5-4.

The tenth game offered four game points and six match points, with two rivals battling for 20 minutes! Tsitsipas wasted four match points but kept his composure. The 8th seed erased the rival’s game points and finally seized the sixth match point after Thiago’s forehand error to move into the third round.
