The top seed Daniil Medvedev will compete in the quarter-final of the ATP 250 event in Marseille. The former champion faced a qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second round and earned a rock-solid 6-2, 6-4 victory in an hour and nine minutes.
The Russian raised his level in comparison to his performance in Rotterdam last week. The top-10 player dropped ten points in his games and defended the only break he faced, mounting the pressure on the other side.
Herbert served at 56% and faced issues behind the initial shot. The Frenchman sprayed six double faults and claimed only eight points behind the second serve. Medvedev took 46% of the return points and converted three of four break chances.

The top seed tamed his strokes nicely and landed 22 service winners and tamed his strokes nicely with 19 direct points and 13 mistakes. Pierre-Hugues stood on a negative 10-28 ratio, ending his campaign in the second round.
They kicked off the action with four comfortable holds, reaching 2-2 in ten minutes. Herbert hit a double fault in the fifth game and faced three break points. The home player sprayed a backhand error on the first, dropping serve at love and falling 3-2 behind.

Medvedev cemented the lead after a deuce in game six, landing a service winner and moving 4-2 ahead. A qualifier struggled again in the seventh game. He denied the first break point with a volley winner at the net before netting a routine forehand on the second.
Thus, Daniil moved 5-2 up and wrapped up the opener with a service winner in game eight, bringing the first part of the match home in 27 minutes! Herbert placed a deep return in the second game of the second set for his only break chance.

The Russian erased it with a powerful serve and held with a forced error for 1-1. The home favorite missed his opportunity and struggled on serve in the next one. He faced three break points after a double fault and mirrored that on the first to fall a set and a break down.
They served well in the remaining seven games. Medvedev climbed back from 0-30 in the eighth game and held for 5-3. The top seed served for the win at 5-4 and forced the rival’s mistake for three match points. Daniil converted the first with a service winner, moving over the top in style.
