Brian Harman played impressively in San Antonio, winning the Valero Texas Open. The 38-year-old golfer performed brilliantly in the last tournament, and not even difficult weather conditions could stand in the way of his victory. The experienced American later shared the difficulties he faced.
Namely, before the start of the tournament, his close friend, Cathy Dowdy, was placed in hospice care.
Cathy tried to save his son from drowning last year, but after that, she suffered brain damage and was in a coma for months. After the victory, the American golfer sent a message to her family, stressing that he couldn’t wait to see them.
“I’m going to dedicate this win to the entire Dowdy family,” Harman said, as quoted by Athlon Sports.
“I know Cathy is fighting really hard right now, and we love ya’ll so much. And can’t wait to get home and see ya’ll.”
What exactly happened last year?
The real drama happened last year, when his wife took the children and Cathy to Ponte Vedra for a swim. Harman was playing a tournament in China at the time.
However, his son got caught up in a rip tide, and Dowdy decided to immediately jump into the water. However, her attempt was unsuccessful, but another man, Crane Cantrell, managed to save the six-year-old boy.
Dowdy then suffered serious injuries, and the famous golfer has not forgotten her act.
The experienced American admitted that he had difficulty playing this tournament, emphasizing that he misses Cathy very much.
“Playing with a heavy heart today,” Harman said.
“Miss Cathy, the way I talked about it at the RSM Classic, that went after my boy in the water. Yeah, she’s not going so good. And, just thinking about her all day.”
These victories bring special emotions. While, on one hand he was super excited and happy about the victory, on the other hand Brian felt a deep emptiness for Dowdy.
