Jannik Sinner’s reign as the world No 1 was never going to be affected by his defeat in the epic French Open final against Carlos Alcaraz, but it has handed him a blow in the battle for another ranking race.
Alcaraz’s epic win in the five-set Paris final has sent shockwaves around the sporting world, with viewing figures released by TNT Sports confirming the audiences around the world set new records.
Alcaraz’s fifth Grand Slam cemented his legacy as one of the all-time greats of the sport at the tender age of 22 and it has also strengthened his lead at the top of the ATP Race rankings.
The official ATP Rankings track the progress of players over a 52-week period, while the ATP Race captures a snapshot of the players who are making waves in this calendar year.
By adding a Grand Slam title and 2,000 ranking points to his record in Paris, Alcaraz has now opened up a huge lead on all his rivals in the ATP Race that will decide the eight players who qualify for the end-of-season ATP Finals in Turin.

The race to be the first player to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin is on and Alcaraz is on course to be the first player to reach the points threshold required to confirm entry for the end-of-season tournament.
Alcaraz currently has 5,740 points so far in 2025 and the points target required to reach the ATP Finals is 7,320.
He could add to his points total in the ATP 500 tournament at the Queen’s Club next week and could get over the finishing line in the race to qualify for the ATP Finals if he retains his Wimbledon title.
Sinner has 3,950 points in the ATP Race and that is a hugely impressive number as he has only played three tournaments in 2025 due to his three-month suspension following a positive doping test in March 2024.
Alexander Zverev is in third place points and a surging Jack Draper is in fourth position, with those two players well on course to join Alcaraz and Sinner in the ATP Finals.
The top four players in the ATP Race are also the top four players in the official rankings, with the only difference coming in the order as Sinner is top of the 52-week rankings.
Next in the ATP Race rankings is Lorenzo Musetti with 2,600 and Novak Djokovic’s run to the French Open semi-finals has fired him up to sixth place with 2,580 points.
Casper Ruud is in seventh place with 2,075, as his points total is boosted but his win at the ATP Masters tournament in Madrid last month.
America’s Tommy Paul is also enjoying a great 2025 and he is in eighth position on the ATP Race rankings with 1,900 points.
This list can expose players who are performing below their ranking and an out-of-form Taylor Fritz is at No 7 in the official rankings, but he is way down in 20th position in the ATP Race rankings.
Daniil Medvedev is another player struggling this year, as he is 11th in the ATP Rankings and is down in 18th position in the Race.
