Carlos Alcaraz potential weakness exposed as French Open winner misses out on top 10

Despite his recent performances, a potential weakness in Carlos Alcaraz’s game can be seen by an ATP leaderboard measuring the top servers in the game.

The Spaniard’s win in Roland Garros has solidified his position as one of the heirs to the Djokovic-Federer-Nadal throne but the 22-year-old appears to have a weakness in his game – his serve.

A leaderboard produced by the ATP measures all the men’s players for their service in the last 52 weeks before giving them a serving rating and surprisingly, not only is Alcaraz out of the top 10 but out of the top 15 as well.

The statistic takes into account the percentage of first serves, first serve points won, second serve points won, service games won, average aces per match and average double faults before giving players an overall rating,

When Alcaraz’s stats are added up, his rating comes out at 281.6, only good enough for 16th on the list.

While the number of times he has hit the first serve in is on par with the best, it is his number of average aces that sees him way down on his rivals.

In the last 52 weeks, Alcaraz has averaged 4.9 aces per match while the likes of Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev have averaged 8 and above.

Alacarz also trails that pair when it comes to first serves won with 72.5% some way short of the 78.7% of Sinner and the 76.8% of Zverev.

However, Alacarz’s second serve is better at 57%, more than the 55.3% of Zverev but less than the 59.1% of Sinner.

The Italian is an expert at avoiding double faults with his average of 1.6 a tally beaten only by Brandon Nakashima and Matteo Berrettini in the top 10.

As for service games won, Alacarz’s is again behind Zverev and Sinner with the former on 89.1% and the latter on 91.2%. Alcaraz meanwhile is on 85.3%.

Topping the list is Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard who has a rating of 299. Mpetshi Perricard records an average 16.9 aces per match with Reilly Opelaka the only other player in the top 10 to get close to that tally. It does come at cost though with the Frenchman averaging 5.2 double faults a game.

Second in the list is Matteo Berrtnti whose average aces is some way short of Mpetshi Perricard but his double faults record of 1.5 is better than almost all the players in the top 10.

Taylor Fritz is third in the list while Novak Djokovic is seventh.
