Conchita Martínez hints at combined Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup tournament

Conchita Martínez, former Spanish tennis legend and current director of the Billie Jean King Cup finals, has revealed exciting plans to potentially combine the tournament with the Davis Cup. In an interview with Spanish newspaper AS, Martínez shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup finals, which will move from Seville to Malaga from November 13 to 20 for organizational reasons.

“We are working towards a combined tournament,” said Martínez. “Tennis is heading in that direction, with more and more combined WTA and ATP events.”

The Billie Jean King Cup, featuring top players like Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, Danielle Collins, and an in-form Paula Badosa, will coincide slightly with the Davis Cup, but Martínez remains focused on delivering a successful event. The competition format has also changed, moving directly to the knockout stage, which Martínez believes simplifies the experience for fans.

Martínez also spoke about the impact of Spain’s presence in the final stages, particularly in attracting local audiences, saying, “It wasn’t the same last year in Malaga without Spain in the Davis Cup.”

The tennis icon also took time to discuss her coaching relationship with young prodigy Mirra Andreeva, emphasizing the importance of patience and steady progress: “It’s a project worth the effort, and seeing Mirra grow every day motivates me a lot.”
