Daniil Medvedev shuts down retirement claims with brutally honest statement

Daniil Medvedev may be off to a slow start to 2025 but he is absolutely not thinking about retiring from pro tennis because he still makes a pretty good living out of the sport.

On Wednesday, the world No. 7 suffered another disappointing loss after qualifier Mattia Bellucci handed him a 6-4 6-7 (6) 6-3 loss in the Rotterdam round-of-16.

Following the loss, the 2021 US Open champion now stands at 2-2 in 2025, having also been upset by Learner Tien in the Australian Open second round.

When asked about what has been causing this, Medvedev repeated listed the same reason once again – the playing conditions on the ATP Tour.

“Slow courts, slow balls, but it’s not new. I don’t have enough power in these conditions to dictate the game,” the former world No. 1 said.

Medvedev: I still make a lot of money

Last year was the first season since 2017 in which the Russian didn’t win any titles

Evidently, he has been losing a step to the top players in the game.

But when asked if he is thinking about retiring, the 28-year-old quickly shut that down.

“No, I mean, I don’t even know what to say about this. I like tennis, still win a lot of money, so I’m going to continue playing till I can do it,” Medvedev noted.

“If I drop out of the Top 100, then I don’t know, but this is probably not going to happen. And I’m pretty sure I can come back strong enough. That’s it.”

Truth be told, the Russian still does make a lot of money although his results haven’t been the best in the past 12 months.

However, the issue remains that he simply isn’t managing to figure out how to adapt to what he calls very slow conditions and be a strong force again.

It remains to be seen if Medvedev can turn the page in his next couple of tournaments.
