Emma Raducanu seemingly won’t judge Vladimir Platenik based on her Indian Wells showing as the British tennis star noted that the Slovak coach became a part of her team only a couple of days ago and there wasn’t really much time to do any serious work.
On Wednesday, British media reported that Platenik – a former coach of Dominika Cibulkova and Daria Kasatkina – was joining the 2021 US Open champion’s team on a trial basis. The following day, the world No. 55 played her opening match in Indian Wells and got bounced 3-6 2-6 by Moyuka Uchijima.
Following the loss, Raducanu was asked if she could share something about her new coach and how it looks to be around him on and off the court.
“We haven’t necessarily done that much yet, because he arrived very, very recently. So it was the day before the match where we don’t necessarily want to, like, change anything,” the former world No. 10 explained.
“So we haven’t actually started, I’d say, like, proper work. Yeah, from how I have met him, he’s very serious, he’s very professional, gets on with it. So yeah, we’ll see how it goes.”
Raducanu hopes Platenik is the right person for her
Shortly concluding her Australian Open run, the 22-year-old lost her coach Nick Cavaday, who stepped away due to health issues. After the Cavaday departure, the Briton said she would wait for “the right fit” to happen before adding a replacement.
“Yeah, a lot has happened since Australia. It’s good that I have someone who is very experienced here. And we’ll see how the work goes and how we get on as well on and off the court and the methods and everything. So I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes,” Raducanu noted.
Since the British tennis star exited Indian Wells very early, she and Platenik will now have 10 days to get some work done before she returns to action at the Miami Open.
