Famous Tennis Coaches Honored with the Bob Brett Mentoring Award

Seefeld, an extraordinary and amazing village in the Austrian Alps, a host of several Olympia- and World Championships, formed a magnificent frame for the International Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame Award Celebration 2024. This outstanding event has as its vocal mission the celebration of the long-term accomplishments and the characters of innovative and dedicated coaches.

Supported by the Professional Tennis Coach Association (PTCA), in association with the Professional Tennis Coaches Association (PTPA), many eminent names from the tennis community came together to mark his remarkable achievement and enduring impact on the sport.

Wonderful Accolades For Wonderful Coaches

The Bob Brett Mentoring Award, created to honor the legendary and successful coach Bob Brett, is presented to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication in mentoring players and coaches. Brett’s daughters Caroline and Katarina paid emotional tribute to their late father. It was in memory of Bob Brett and his incredible record of remarkable international tennis coaches and personalities. On this occasion, Caroline and Katarina awarded the Bob Brett Mentoring Award to Antonio Cascales Martinez, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Sven Groeneveld, Carl-Axel Hageskog, Roland Hansson, Luis Mediero, Emilio Sanchez Vicario, Marian Vajda, Ronald Leitgeb (posthumously) and Peter Lundgren (posthumously). The Bob Brett Mentoring Award honors coaches who work tirelessly in the shadow and play an important role in developing talent and champions of tomorrow.

The Unicorn Lifetime Achievement Award — a symbol of commitment, brilliance, and might — was bestowed upon a select group of coaches whose poetic contribution in practice has stamped tennis history, which inspired PTCA Chairman Håkan Dahlbo to make this award.

Different contributions to values in coaching are captured in the Diamond Special Awards.

The featuring categories are:

White: A great integrity and amazing successes internationally, as a professional coach credentialed.
Blue — Significant contributions as a role model in a coaching and/or other significant capacity in professional tennis.
Yellow: Tennis journalism and analysis dominance.
Green: Contributions toward event development.

An Evening Beyond Recognition

The evening was about more than just tribute. The atmosphere was further enhanced by enchanting performances, complete with light displays, live music, and a magical show that left guests entranced. The Master Class sessions took place on the courts in the morning with the likes of Emilio Sánchez, Luis Mediero, Antonio Cascales Martinez (Spain), Oliver Heuft/Jürgen Müller (Germany), Lynton Joseph (Australia) and Nirupama Sanjeev (India), displaying training modalities which incorporated modern technology with a wealth of experience.

A Convergence of Legends

Some familiar names included Carl-Axel Hageskog, Roland Hansson, Antonio Cascales Martínez (the coach of Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero) and Eric van Harpen, who were very successful coach on the WTA Tour. Also there were Swedish tennis legends Anders Järryd and Henrik Holm; ATP coaches Fredrik Rosengren, Magnus Tideman and Martin Bohm; German Davis Cup-playing champion Patrick Kühnen and player Christopher Kas; tournament directors Florian Leitgeb and Peter-Michael Reichel; Lukas and Julia Lundgren (children of coach Peter Lundgren); Eurosport’s Barbara Schett with her husband, Josh Eagle; and Dr. Ann Quinn who was the performance coach for Pat Cash and Pat Rafter for many years. During an incredible spell of emotion, Davis Cup champion Henrik Sundström was “magically summoned” to present the Unicorn Lifetime Achievement Award to his mentor and coach Roland Hansson.

Reflecting on the evening, event founder and organizer Håkan Dahlbo said: “This evening, we were not only paying tribute to amazing individuals, but also the principles of mentorship, innovation, and passion that bind our sport together. Seefeld has provided the perfect backdrop for this magical event.

It was a night to remember at the International Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame Award Celebration in December 2024 where we were treated to inspiration, well-deserved tributes, and camaraderie around the evolution of tennis. The experience reaffirmed just how vital the status of coach is in tennis. Attention is often on the players when, in fact, it is the unwavering guidance, direction, and belief of coaches that enable these athletes to shine.
