Giovanni Mpetschi Perricard – winner of two titles in Lyon and Basel – was one of the happiest of the season just ended, establishing himself among the most interesting young promises of men’s tennis. And he did it above all thanks to his impressive power and efficiency in service.
The 21-year-old Frenchman, who ended the year just outside the top 30, started the new season in style, reaching the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 in Brisbane with two prestigious victories over Nick Kyrgios and Frances Tiafoe, demonstrating that he has – in addition to his service – important technical, physical and mental qualities.
Thanks to his latest success over the American tennis player, the Frenchman has further improved his score against top 20 tennis players. For Mpetschi Perricard, this is the sixth victory in seven matches played against players ranked in the top twenty of the ATP ranking, earning him the first position in this special ranking after 7 matches played:
86% (6/7) : Mpetshi Perricard
71% (5/7) : A. Medvedev
71% (5/7) : Auger Aliassime
71% (5/7) : Janowicz
71% (5/7) : Alonso
71% (5/7) : Schuettler

After his success over Tiafoe in the round of 16 of the Australian tournament, the Frenchman spoke about his continued improvements in his serve.
“When I was young, most of the training time was not dedicated to serving, we were trying to add something to my game. I was tall, mobility was a problem, I didn’t have the current ability with my legs. Of course, some coaches took care of the technique of the service, let’s say until fifteen or sixteen years old. We knew it would be a weapon in the future. I can do better, add speed to the second, be more consistent, find new targets,” said the young Frenchman.
In the quarterfinals, the 21-year-old will face the other next gen Jakub Mensik, with a semifinal with Novak Djokovic on the horizon.
“A challenge that I have in my dreams but not in my head, I’m not in the semis yet. I have to give my best in the quarterfinals. On a lucky day, anyone can beat anyone. I don’t like this mentality of having or not being afraid, I focus on what I can do: if I do well, I’m dangerous, otherwise anyone can beat me,” he added.
