Holger Rune finished the season ranked 13th, dropping five places in comparison to the end of 2023. The young Dane missed his last chance to qualify for the ATP Finals following the Paris Masters semi-final loss.
He withdrew from the ATP 250 event in Metz and wrapped up his season. Rune has not won an ATP title since Munich in April 2023. He hopes to change that in 2025, looking for a better run and more chances to compete against the rivals from the top.
Asked about the former legend whom we would love to see in his coaching box, Holger mentioned his idol, Roger Federer. The Dane understands it is very unlikely he can bring the 20-time Major winner to his team, although he continues to dream about that.
Roger and Holger practiced during the 2019 ATP Finals, with the 16-year-old learning valuable leassons from the Swiss Maestro.

Holger’s coaching sagas
The young Dane struggled to find the perfect coaching formula for almost a year, which effected his results! He parted ways with Patrick Mouratoglou in August last year and added Boris Becker to his team in October.
They worked together in Basel and Paris and made plans for 2024 collaboration. Additionally, Roger Federer’s former coach Severin Luthi joined Rune’s team in December, with the young gun forging a powerful team ahead of 2024.

However, both coaches stepped down within a couple of weeks of the new season, leaving Holger in not an ideal position. The 2022 Paris Masters champion reached out and reunited with Patrick Mouratoglou, the coach who knew him the best.
They stayed together until July before mutually parting ways, ending their third stint. Rune kept Lars Christensen and added another compatriot, Kenneth Carlsen, hoping to settle down and find a winning formula ahead of 2025.
Rune’s 2024 run
Holger embraced a 45-23 score in 2024, reaching one final at the beginning of the year and losing the next seven semi-finals. He failed to notch two victories at eight tournaments and fell eight times to the rivals ranked outside the top-40. Rune scored only seven wins at Majors.

He reached the last 16 in Paris and London and failed to repeat that in Melbourne and New York. The Dane played a bit better at a Masters 1000 level, embracing an 18-9 score. Holger reached the semi-final in Cincinnati and Paris and added two more quarter-finals.
The Dane competed at the 2023 ATP Finals and made a reliable start to the 2024 season. The 20-year-old kicked off the new year with the final at the ATP 250 event in Brisbane. Holger fell to Grigor Dimitrov after a great battle, settling with the runner-up trophy.
He experienced an early Australian Open loss to world no. 122 Arthur Cazaux. Rune retired in Montpellier due to an injury and reached the semi-final in Acapulco a few weeks later. Holger defeated Taylor Fritz at Indian Wells before falling to Daniil Medvedev.

The Dane defeated Grigor Dimitrov in Monte Carlos after a thriller. He fought well against Jannik Sinner for nearly three hours before falling in three sets. The yong gun lost the Munich title to Jan-Lennard Struff, taking only two games against the German in the semi-final.
Holger collected two wins in Madrid and Rome and reached the last 16 at Roland Garros. Rune faced Alexander Zverev and fell after a five-setter, battling for over four hours but finishing on the losing side. The young gun experienced an early loss at Queen’s.
He stood on the exit door in the Wimbledon third round before producing a massive comeback against Quentin Halys. Thus, Holger arranmged the fourth-round clash with Novak Djokovic, falling in straight sets after failing to break the legend.

Rune injured his wrist in the Hamburg quarter-final and skipped his first Olympic Games in Paris. He took a break and returned in Montreal, beating two Spaniards before falling to Alexander Zverev in straight sets.
The Dane had a chance to reach a notable final in Cincinnati. Holger defeated Matteo Berrettini, Nuno Borges, Gael Monfils and Jack Draper en route to his first Masters 1000 semi-final of the season. Rune fell to Frances Tiafoe in the deciding tie break, missing an opportunity to fight for the title.
Holger played poorly against Brandon Nakashima at the US Open, falling in the first round in straight sets. The young gun had enough time to prepare for Hangzhou, but it did not help. Rune suffered a heavy loss to world no. 160 Yasutaka Uchiyama.

He raised his level in the remaining events of the season. Rune reached the semi-final in Tokyo, falling to Arthur Fils in two tie breaks. World no. 14 earned two fine victories in Shanghai before taking only three games against Taylor Fritz in another poor display.
Holger returned to action in Basel and fell to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the semi-final. He repeated that run at the Paris Masters, hoping to extend his ATP Finals chances. Rune fell to Alexander Zverev in straight sets, ending his season ranked 13th and seeking a better run in 2025.
“I’m a big fan of Roger Federer. I would love to see him in my coaching box. However, I believe he is not interested in taking that job,” Holger Rune said.
