Holger Rune reveals health issues he battled during shock Buenos Aires loss

Holger Rune didn’t enjoy an impressive campaign at this year’s Buenos Aires and later admitted that playing at the Argentina Open was probably a mistake considering that he didn’t feel anywhere near his best.

The Dane, who was the second-seeded player in Argentina’s capital this week, had a first-round bye at the tournament.

On Thursday, he kicked off his run at the tournament by meeting home favorite Mariano Navone.

And it didn’t go well for Rune, who suffered a 1-6 6-7 (2) loss to the world No. 37.

For the 21-year-old. this was his third appearance at the Argentina Open and also the third time that he failed to register a win.

Rune: I battled influenza, a shoulder injury

“Looking back I think it was too early to play after my influenza last week,” the world No. 12 wrote on X following his defeat.

“My shoulder was not working and the whole body seemed extremely vulnerable. I will take the time and get proper rest now.

“When the body is not there, the brain shuts down and I am just very sorry I couldn’t deliver what I wanted on court today. Sorry Argentina.”

Last week, Rune competed at the ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam.

There, he beat Lorenzo Sonego in his opening match before falling short to Pedro Martinez in the round-of-16.

After that match, the Dane’s mother revealed that her son got a bad flu during the Davis Cup weekend.

Rune will now probably take some time to get healthy again before returning to action.
