Viktor Hovland continues to make headlines and has just announced, for the second time in just over a year, his separation from his coach, Joe Mayo, at the dawn of the 2025 season on the PGA Tour.
A few days after being the victim of a domestic accident during the Christmas holidays which caused him to fracture a toe while he was preparing to celebrate New Year’s Eve, Viktor Hovland has once again decided to separate from his coach, Joe Mayo.
Hovland, statements
Again because the two men had initially separated at the end of 2023 after an exceptional year during which the Norwegian won the FedEx Cup and shone with Europe at the Ryder Cup in Rome.
But in May, the duo was reunited to try to get the Oslo native back on track after a very disappointing start to the season with only one top 20 in four and a half months!
And so seven months later, here we go again.
“We had a little disagreement about what path to take, what’s best for me,” Hovland explained. “I feel like I’ve learned so much now and have so many skills that I don’t need anyone to hold my hand anymore.”
Even though he won’t have a regular coach, the six-time PGA Tour winner says he plans to rely on the expertise of another trainer via videos.
“It’s always good to have someone watching what I’m doing, to check the changes I’m making. So I send videos to another trainer, but he’s more of a consultant. I’m the one responsible for my choices now.”
Finally present at the Sentry this week in Hawaii, the 27-year-old world number 8 says he’s not suffering from his injury. He hopes to reconnect with the victory that has eluded him since the Tour Championship in September 2023.

In 2021 he continues to break records: in order, in June he won his first tournament on the European Tour, winning the BMW International Open.
