How Iga Swiatek can join icons Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova in exclusive Grand Slam club

Iga Swiatek is just two matches away from winning her sixth Grand Slam singles title – and her fifth title at the French Open.

The Pole has reigned supreme at Roland Garros in recent years, with a 40-2 record to her name after Tuesday’s 6-1, 7-5 quarter-final win over Elina Svitolina.

Swiatek faces a crunch semi-final against world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday, though it is not hard to imagine her lifting the title come Saturday’s final.

Here, we look at what history she could make should she win a fourth consecutive French Open crown.

Has any woman won four straight Grand Slam titles?

What Swiatek is trying to achieve is incredibly rare; across all four Grand Slam tournaments in the Open Era, only two women have won the same major in four consecutive years.

Those women happen to be Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, two all-time greats of the sport.

Even with a fourth French Open title in 2025, Swiatek would still have some way to go to match Navratilova’s Wimbledon streak.

The Czech-American won six titles at SW19 from 1982 to 1987, the most consecutive titles won by any player – male or female – at an individual Grand Slam tournament in the Open Era.

However, she would draw exactly level with Evert, who claimed four consecutive US Open titles from 1974 to 1978.

Evert also won the French Open in four consecutive appearances (1974-75, 1979-80), though she skipped the tournament for three straight years during that run.

Has any woman won four straight French Open titles?

In the Open Era, no woman has won the French Open in four consecutive years.

Swiatek currently shares the record of most consecutive women’s singles titles, emulating tennis legends Justine Henin (2005-07) and Monica Seles (1990-92) with three consecutive triumphs.

However, before the professional era, when the event was known as the French Championships, two women won the title for four straight years.

The first of those was Jeanne Matthey, who claimed the title for four consecutive years from 1909-12, though the second is one of the most famous figures in tennis history.

Tennis icon Suzanne Lenglen is the most recent woman to win four consecutive singles titles at Roland Garros, lifting the title from 1920-23.

Lenglen won six singles titles at Roland Garros overall, and both the women’s singles trophy and the second-largest court at Roland Garros are named in her honour.

The caveat to both Matthey and Lenglen’s streaks is that the tournament was not officially recognised as a Grand Slam event until 1925, when Lenglen won the fifth of her six titles.

That means that Swiatek, Henin, and Seles jointly hold the Grand Slam record at the tournament, handing the Pole the chance to become the first woman to win the event four straight times as a Slam.
