How Lois Boisson broke an Emma Raducanu WTA Rankings record with French Open run

Lois Boisson made plenty of her history with her stunning French Open run.

Ranked 361st in the world, few had heard of the Frenchwoman prior to her Grand Slam debut.

However, the 22-year-old became the first wildcard of the Open Era to reach the last four of the women’s singles event, and just the fifth woman to reach the semi-final of her debut Grand Slam.

Boisson was the first Frenchwoman to reach the quarter-final of her home major since Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic in 2017, and the first to reach the semi-final since Marion Bartoli in 2011.

She has rightfully been rewarded for her run with a major surge up the WTA Rankings, with Boisson now a top 100 player – and the French No 1.

And, thanks to her exploits, she has broken a 21st-century WTA Rankings record previously held by Emma Raducanu.

Biggest rise

Having previously reached a career-high of world No 152, Boisson was down outside the top 350 of the rankings after a nine-month layoff, suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury twelve months ago.

Receiving a main draw wildcard into Roland Garros, Boisson picked up her first Grand Slam match win with a shock triumph over 24th seed Elise Mertens in the opening round.

She would later beat fellow French wildcard Elsa Jacquemot in the third round, before shocking the tennis world with back-to-back top 10 wins over world No 3 Jessica Pegula and world No 6 Mirra Andreeva.

Though Boisson’s run was ultimately ended by eventual champion Coco Gauff in the semi-final, the 22-year-old still earned a staggering 800 ranking points for her efforts.

That propelled her from world No 361 to world No 65, making her a top-100 player for the very first time in her career.

And, her leap of 296 spots up the WTA Rankings is the biggest jump that any woman has made into the top 100 this century.

That record was previously held by Raducanu, who soared into the top 100 following her stunning US Open triumph back in 2021.

The Brit was ranked 150th heading into the tournament, but her iconic run, which saw her not drop a single set across qualifying or the main draw, propelled her up 127 places to world No 23.

Raducanu would go on to reach a career-high of world No 10 in 2022, and is currently 37th in the WTA Rankings after slowly working her way back up following an injury layoff in 2023.

The third-biggest WTA Rankings surge into the top 100 this century came back in 2009, when Alexandra Dulgheru claimed her first WTA title at the Warsaw Open.

Ranked 201st coming into the tournament, the Romanian won two qualifying matches and then five main-draw matches to lift the title, beating Alona Bondarenko.

Dulgheru rose to world No 83 off the back of that triumph, a leap of 118 spots up the WTA Rankings; she would reach a high of 26th in April 2011.
