Indian Wells: Jack Draper claims his first Masters 1000 title over Holger Rune

Jack Draper is a Masters 1000 champion at 23! The Briton conquered Indian Wells following a rock-solid 6-2, 6-2 victory over Holger Rune in 69 minutes. Thus, a left-hander celebrated the most notable title of his career and secured a top-10 debut.

Rune advanced to his fourth Masters 1000 final but stood no chance against such a strong opponent. Jack collected 20 points more than his opponent and dominated on serve and return. The Briton dropped two points behind the first serve and faced no break points.

Holger felt the pressure in his games and cracked under it. The younger player sprayed too many mistakes and lost almost half of the points behind the initial shot. The Dane faced seven break points and got broken two times in each set to finish runner-up.

Draper forged a massive advantage in the shortest rallies up to four strokes. He clinched a trophy in that segment and stayed ahead of his rival in the mid-range exchanges.  A left-hander made a push in the first game of the encounter.

He seized a break point and forged an early advantage and confidence. Jack cemented the break with a forehand winner in game two and did not slow down. The 13th seed landed a forehand down the line winner in the third game for break points.

He converted the first with a volley winner at the net, forging a 3-0 advantage after ten minutes. The Briton secured the fourth game with an ace and created a break chance in the next one that could have pushed him closer to a bagel.

Rune saved it with one of his rare forehand winners and held to get his name on the scoreboard. A left-hander clinched the sixth game at love with an unreturned serve and served for the opener at 5-2. Draper seized a set point with a forced error for 6-2 in 29 minutes.

Holger made a wrong call in the first game of the second set, allowing Jack to land a return winner and build a set and a break advantage. The Sutton native held for 2-0 before facing deuces at 2-1. The Briton drew the Dane’s mistake to bring the game home and remain in front.

Jack secured the sixth game with a crafty winner at the net and stepped in on the return in the next one. Rune sprayed a backhand error on the second break point, falling 5-2 behind and seeing the writings on the wall.
