Iga Swiatek has now had two very dominant wins in Indian Wells after the Polish tennis star also destroyed Dayana Yastremska 6-0 6-2 to safely reach the round-of-16.
After demolishing 2022 WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia 6-2 6-0 in her opener in the desert, the defending champion also won the opening nine games of her match against the 46th-ranked Ukrainian.
At that point, Swiatek appeared to be heading toward registering an absolutely impressive double-bagel win. But Yastremska managed to avoid that outcome after finally getting on the board in the fifth game of the second set and then also holding to her serve two games later.
For the Pole, it was her second dominant win over the Ukrainian this year – she also completed a 7-5 6-0 victory in their Dubai match last month.
For a place in the Indian Wells quarterfinal, Swiatek will play against the winner of the match between No. 15 seed Karolina Muchova and Katerina Siniakova.
What Swiatek said about her win versus Yastremska?
The former world No. 1 admitted that she was thrilled with her performance but also tried to keep it respectful by claiming that the Ukrainian played well toward the end of the match.
“At the end, it was a bit tighter. It’s always hard to finish a match like that. I’m happy I got my intensity up in the last game and could close it with confidence. For sure it was a great match. I had control from the beginning. I’m happy with the performance for sure,” the Pole said.
Swiatek has dropped a total of four games through her opening two matches and she definitely looks like the top favorite to repeat as the champion in Indian Wells.
If Muchova beats Siniakova, fans in Indian Wells will have a chance to watch a rematch of the 2023 French Open final in the desert.
