Italian Tennis President accuses Novak Djokovic of having made ‘faux pas’

Angelo Binaghi, President of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation, did not appreciate the words shared by Novak Djokovic on the sidelines of the Australian Open 2025 semifinal lost against Alexander Zverev.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion withdrew in the semifinal after the first set against the German. The Serbian tennis player, after losing the tie break and after an hour and twenty minutes of play due to the thigh problem suffered during the quarterfinal against Carlos Alcaraz, decided to throw in the towel. Nole therefore left the way open for the final to Alexander Zverev who will face Jannik Sinner tomorrow morning on the Rod Laver Arena, who in the second semifinal beat Ben Shelton in straight sets.

Speaking at a press conference, the Serbian tennis player said and then wrote on his X profile: “I tried to recover for today’s match, but I couldn’t push myself any further. However, there are positives to be drawn from this year’s Australian Open. Congratulations to Alexander Zverev for reaching another Grand Slam final. I hope you win the title because you deserve it, my friend.”

Replying harshly to the Serbian tennis player, Binaghi said: “I would say that it was a great fall in style for Djokovic. Ending a career in this way is not very edifying: he does it hoping that one of the two finalists wins, among other things towards Jannik who is an exemplary guy. The end-of-match statements do not do him credit.”

Binaghi also talked about Sinner, analyzing: “Winning is difficult, but confirming yourself is more so.”
