Jannik Sinner matches Andy Murray! Who is his next target?

Jannik Sinner started his 41st week on the ATP throne on Monday. The 23-year-old matched Andy Murray on the list of no. 1 players in ATP history, becoming the 14th player to achieve that since 1973. More good news will emerge in the upcoming weeks!

Jannik will pass the Briton next week and move closer to Gustavo Kuerten, who ended his no. 1 journey on 43 weeks. With Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz losing ground in comparison to the Italian, Sinner will likely remain at the top until his return.

The three-time Major winner made an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after testing positive two times for a banned anabolic steroid Clostebol in March 2024. He accepted a three-month suspension, missing four Masters 1000 tournaments ahead of his return at the home Rome Masters in May.

Sinner has been among the players to beat since the closing stages of 2023. The Italian has won 93 of his previous 100 encounters, conquering numerous notable titles and writing history books following an incredible run.

Jannik defeated Novak Djokovic two times within two weeks at the end of 2023 and finished the season in the top-4. He gained a boost and embraced a 73-6 run in 2024, leaving everyone behind and becoming the dominant figure of men’s tennis.

Sinner claimed eight ATP titles, including two Majors, the ATP Finals and three Masters 1000 crowns. Jannik’s first Major crown came at the Australian Open over Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev. He won Rotterdam and Miami in the following months for a massive lead in the ATP Race.

The Italian experienced hip issues during the clay season. He recovered by Roland Garros and reached the semi-final in Paris. Sinner wasted two sets to one lead against Carlos Alcaraz and ended his campaign without reaching the final.

However, he collected enough ATP points to pass Novak Djokovic and become the 29th world no. 1 in ATP history. Jannik won his first ATP title as world no. 1 in Halle before losing in the Wimbledon quarter-final to Daniil Medvedev in a five-setter.

Sinner skipped the Olympic Games in Paris and made a strong return on his favorite hard court. The world’s best player lifted his second Masters 1000 crown of the season in Cincinnati and gathered confidence ahead of the US Open.

The Italian was the favorite in New York, and he proved that on the court despite the doping scandal lingering above his head. Sinner beat Jack Draper and Taylor Fritz en route to his second Major trophy. Jannik secured another Masters 1000 title over Novak Djokovic in Shanghai.

The home star was a player to beat at the ATP Finals in Turin. He defeated five rivals in straight sets to secure 1500 ATP points and his eighth ATP title of the season. World no. 1 led Italy toward the Davis Cup title defense in Malaga.

Thus, he finished the season on a high note and prepared for another strong run in 2025. The defending Australian Open champion faced no issues in Melbourne. He ousted seven rivals and dropped two sets en route to his third Major title at 23.

He defeated world no. 2 Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 in the title clash to extend his dominance. Off the court, however, his doping scandal cast a shadow over his remarkable performance! After almost a year of pressure and uncertainty, Jannik made an agreement with WADA.

The Italian accepted a suspension, leaving the ATP Tour from February 9 to May 4. Jannik lost 1600 ATP points and opened the door for his closest rivals to pass him and end his no. 1 streak. The main favorite, Alexander Zverev, experienced a couple of early losses and plagued his chances.

Carlos Alcaraz failed to defend the Indian Wells title, losing points and staying miles behind the Italian.
