Jannik Sinner moves closer to Andre Agassi

Jannik Sinner is enjoying his 28th week on the ATP throne. World no. 1 embraced an incredible season, winning 73 of 79 matches and leaving everyone behind. Jannik collected numerous achievements and will try to repeat them in 2025. 

The Italian is preparing for the new season in Dubai, working hard on further improvements and seeking the Australian Open title defense. Sinner will achieve another milestone in two weeks, preparing to match Andre Agassi.

The first week of the new year will be Jannik’s 30th on the ATP throne during his inaugural run as world no. 1. The young gun will catch Andre Agassi and become the ninth player on the exclusive list. Jannik’s next target will be Ilie Nastase, the first no. 1 player in ATP history. 

Sinner will pass Nastase and Andy Murray in March. Thus, he will climb through the list and move closer to Rafael Nadal’s first stint, looking good to match the legend at the end of April!

Thus, the Swede ruined the American’s potential record-breaking run of 245 world no. 1 weeks during the inaugural stint! Connors failed to reach 200 weeks, but Roger Federer achieved that milestone! The Swiss took the throne after the 2004 Australian Open. 

He kept it jeulously for 237 weeks before Rafael Nadal passed him in the summer of 2008. Thus, the Swiss achieved a record that will take some beating in the future, even for someone of Jannik’s caliber. 

Sinner’s 2024 brilliance

Jannik kicked off the 2024 season as world no. 4 after beating Novak Djokovic two times in the closing stages of the previous season. The Italian was among the favorites in Melbourne and used his form to clinch his first Major crown at 22. 

Sinner dethroned Djokovic with an impressive victory in the semi-final. He faced Daniil Medvedev in the title clash and dropped the opening two sets. Jannik produced a stunning comeback, prevailing in five sets and celebrating his most significant success in a career.

It opened the door for the Italian, and he never looked back for the rest of the season! Sinner clinched anbother trophy in Rotterdam, making a perfect start to the season and embracing a 16-0 start. Jannik suffered his first defeat in the Indian Wells semi-final. 

He won the opening set against Carlos Alcaraz before losing the next two, missing the third title of the season. However, it came in Miami two weeks later. Sinner toppled all the opponents from the quarter-final stage, lifting his second Masters 1000 trophy. 

The ATP Race leader fell to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Monte Carlo semi-final. Jannik withdrew ahead of the Madrid Masters quarter-final due to hip issues and skipped the Rome Masters. Sinner recovered for Roland Garros and reached the semi-final.

He led two sets to one against Carlos Alcaraz before losing ground in sets four and five, experiencing his first defeat at Majors in 2024. Jannik failed to reach the final but earned enough ATP points to dethrone Novak Djokovic and become the 29th world no. 1 in ATP history. 

Sinner competed at the ATP 500 in Halle and claimed his first trophy as world no. 1. He could not repeat that at Wimbledon, reaching the quarter-final but struggling physically against Daniil Medvedev. The Italian missed a set point in the third set and fell in a five-setter. 

Jannik skipped the Olympic Games in Paris and returned to action in Montreal. The defending champion lost to Andrey Rublev in the quarter-final and bounced back in Cincinnati. Sinner ousted Frances Tiafoe in the title clash, earning his third Masters 1000 crown.

World no. 1 was the US Open favorite, and there was no one to stop him! Jannik arranged the title clash against Taylor Fritz and produced a win in straight sets, lifting his second Major trophy of the season. Sinner set the title clash against Carlos Alcaraz in Beijing. 

Two great rivals pushed each other to the limits for nearly three and a half hours. The Spaniard prevailed and earned his third win from as many duels against the world’s best player in 2024. Jannik responded in Shanghai and arranged the title clash with Novak Djokovic.

The young gun beat the veteran in straight sets. celebrating his third Masters 1000 crown of the season and writing history books. Sinner conquered the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh, taking home $6million, the most significant prize money in tennis history. 

Jannik withdrew from the Paris Masters and prepared for the ATP Finals at home in Turin.The world’s best player stood above everyone else, scoring five wins in straight sets and lifting his eighth trophy of the season. 

Sinner led Italy toward the Davis Cup Finals title defense, earning three singles victories and finishing the season with a 73-6 score.
