Jannik Sinner is safely through to his second consecutive Australian Open semi-final. World no. 1 did not feel well two days ago against Holger Rune, and his coach Simone Vagnozzi explained his problems. Jannik recovered and defeated the Dane in four sets.
Felling no issues, Sinner dominated world no. 8 Alex de Minaur in the quarter-final, earning a 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 victory and remaining on the title course. Speaking about Jannik’s problems, Vagnozzi cited headache and stomach issues.
They forced world no. 1 to skip the warm-up against the Rune clash. The conditions on the court during the match made the things tougher, but the Italian handled them nicely and moved over the top in four sets.
The Italian felt better during an off day on Tuesday and played at his best on Wednesday. Jannik faced Alex during the night session at Rod Laver Arena. He produced his best match of the tournament to sail into the last four, arranging the clash against Ben Shelton.

Alex should have been Jannik’s most serious challenge in Melbourne ahead of the final. However, the Aussie failed from the court and looked powerless against the defending champion. The Italian served well and overpowered his rival on the return, sealing the deal in under two hours.
Janik produced his best serving of the tournament. He lost ten points in his games and saved the only break point he faced. De Minaur felt the pressure and cracked under it after serving at only 51%. Sinner stole 46% of the return points and converted six of ten break points.

World no. 1 landed 27 winners and 19 unforced errors. The home favorite fired only ten direct points and sprayed 26 unforced errors, never looking like a serious contender. Sinner served well in the opening set and grabbed a break in the fourth game.
The Italian held at 5-3 with a service winner, taking the opener 6-3 in 38 minutes. Alex lost serve in the first game of the second set and wasted his only break point in the next one after Jannik’s service winner. The defending champion grabbed another break in the fifth game.

The Italian landed a powerful serve at 5-2 for a hold at love, opening two sets to love advantage after an hour and 18 minutes. World no. 8 faded from the court in the third set. The home favorite sprayed a forehand error in the first game and lost serve.
Sinner clinched another break in the third game and made another push on the return at 5-1. World no. 1 drew the rival’s mistake, sealing the deal in style and moving into the semi-final.

“What bothered Jannik the other day? He had a headache and stomach issues in the morning. In short, he did not feel at his best. We chose to skip the warm-up and preserve energy. Things got a bit worse during the match because of the conditions.
However, it was nothing to worry about. Majors last two weeks, and you have to understand how to manage these situations when they happen. Jannik is learning quickly from defeats and mistakes. He felt better yesterday, which made us happy.
We knew he had overcome that minor setback and felt fine again. The weather was fine today; it was not very hot, and it also helped him,” Simone Vagnozzi said.
