Javier Sainz, Spanish professional champion

The Biscayan Javier Sainz was proclaimed this Sunday the Spanish professional golf champion after winning at the Real Novo Sancti Petri Iberostar Golf Club in Cádiz with a total of 208 strokes, three ahead of Joseba Torres and Juan Salama.

Sainz, who signed a card with 70 strokes on the third and final day, could not seal the title practically until the last putt, since Torres, a professional for three months, was only one stroke behind with two holes to play.

Both of them had a thrilling end to the tournament, reduced to 54 holes due to the weather conditions on Thursday, after Sainz was very accurate in the first part of this last day and the errors on the 14th and 16th allowed Torres to dream, but he was ultimately unable to complete his comeback.

“It was a strange day, I played comfortably and well at the beginning. But when I got four strokes ahead… that’s when I started to think a little about how to play. When I missed the putt on the 14th and I saw that Joseba was coming on strong, that’s when I thought that things were getting ugly. Indeed, and thank goodness I made a putt on the 15th,” explained the new champion, who in 2021 lost in the playoff of the Spanish Championship to Iván Cantero at Gambito Golf Calatayud and who in 2022 won in Scotland on the Challenge circuit.

Lucas Vacarisas was fourth with 212 strokes, two less than Alfonso Buendía and Antón Vázquez, tied for fifth place.

The rules of golf are relatively complicated compared to other sports because they are played outdoors, close to nature and animals. Respecting the rules is a basic element in the game of golf, which, almost always based on self-control and the free conscience of the players, often sees distorted results, sometimes consciously, but often unconsciously or through carelessness, due to the non-observance by many players of the rules of the game. In addition to the rules, golf adheres to a code of conduct, known as etiquette, which generally means playing the game with due respect for the golf course and other players. Etiquette is an essential component of this sport.
