Joao Fonseca is off to a winning start at the Australian Open! An in-form youngster faced Federico Agustin Gomez in the first qualifying round and scored a rock-solid 6-4, 6-0 victory in 67 minutes. Fonseca is among the favorites in the qualifying draw!
He came and conquered the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah in December despite being the youngest player in the draw. Not stopping there, Joao kicked off the 2025 season with his second Challenger title in Canberra, cracking the top-120 ahead of Melbourne.

The young gun controlled the pace against the 29th seed at Kia Arena. Joao secured an early break to clinch the opener and produced a bagel in the second set to sail over the top. A teenager delivered fury behind the initial shot!
He dropped five points behind the initial shot in a clinical performance that disarmed his rival. The Argentine fought well in the opener after that early break but stood no chance against such a strong opponent. Joao claimed 44% of the return points.

He seized four of ten break opportunities, keeping everything under control and sailing into the second round. The Brazilian tamed his strokes nicely and outplayed his rival in the shortest and more advanced exchanges.
Federico Agustin squandered a game point at the beginning of the duel. He missed a drop shot on the second break point and experienced an early setback. Fonseca served well in games two and four, moving 3-1 up and settling into a fine rhythm.
The Argentine struggled behind the initial shot in the fifth game. He played against three break points, denying them and remaining within one break deficit. The young gun made another push on the return in the seventh game.

This time he wasted two break points that could have sent him further in front. However, a teenager left those chances behind and wrapped up the opening set with a service winner in game ten, moving 6-4 up after 43 minutes.
Gomez survived a couple of scary games in the first set but could not repeat that in the second! Fonseca barely lost a point on serve and mounted the pressure on the other side. He denied the opponent’s multiple game points in the first game and grabbed a break.

Joao drew the rival’s mistake in the third game for another break, sailing toward the top. The young gun held at love in game four for 4-0 and stepped in on the return in the next one. He welcomed Federico Agustin’s backhand mistake and continued his streak.
Fonseca served for the win at 5-0 and sealed the deal with a booming serve, rattling off 23 off the final 27 points and sailing over the top.
