Sepp Straka celebrated at American Express with a two shot victory. The Austrian made an impressive start to his adventure at this tournament, and a four-stroke lead before the final round only made his job easier. Straka knew that behind him there are well-known faces of the golf scene, and golfers who know how to turn things in their favor on the last day. Nevertheless, despite the nervousness he felt, the Austrian managed to reach the finish line.
Straka admitted that he was nervous, but at the same time proud of how he managed to deal with such a feeling.
The closest to him was Justin Thomas, who shot a 66 to finish at 23-under.
After his great performance, the American golfer emphasized he was close to his opponent, but Straka’s advantage before the final round was decisive. The 31-year-old golfer is proud of himself, stressing that he did everything he could.
“I had a chance,” Thomas said, as quoted by Sky Sports.
“It wasn’t, obviously, a great one on the back nine, but I was proud of myself. I did what I needed to do on the front nine today to at least be making some noise and moving up the leaderboard. It was unfortunate to kind of stall there after 11. Really, really played some great golf today.”
Justin Thomas shared his goals
On Saturday, Thomas stressed that his goal is to continue his great pace and do whatever it takes to achieve success. Tournaments like this are an indication that this could be his year, but of course it’s too early to tell at this point.
“Just keep doing what I’m doing, I don’t need to change or do anything different, just keep building, keep working, tighten some things up,” he said Sunday.
It is important to point out that with this result, Thomas became only the 11th player in PGA Tour history to exceed $60 million in earnings.
