Golf seems to have entered a new era, and it is necessary that golfers, as well as fans, adapt to the evolution of this sport.
With the arrival of LIV Golf, it was clear that the leaders of the Controversial Tour wanted to introduce novelties into the world of golf and change the values that had been valid until then. Although it was not widely accepted among the golf public, it seems that now the PGA Tour is following the same steps.
Aware that interest in golf is decreasing, PGA leaders decided to create the TGL league in cooperation with Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, a project completely different from what we are used to.
The TGL league implies technological innovations and a completely different environment from what we are used to.
In last night’s duel between the two teams at TGL, we could see the captain of one of the teams, Justin Thomas, who admitted that he now has a completely different mindset. The 31-year-old golfer was one of the opponents regarding innovations, but now he sees things in a different way
“I know stepping outside of our comfort zones isn’t always easy,” Thomas said, as quoted by The Big Lead.
“Believe me, in the past I’ve been the first to say ‘no’ before things are even done being asked. I’ve had no interest when someone asks for an interview mid-round or suggests trying something new.”
Justin Thomas reflects on the fans
In recent years, the trend among other sports is that athletes talk more and more openly about challenges during their careers, and even about events in their private lives. The younger population is the one who loves drama, the excitement factor, and everything that modern times bring.
This is the reason why they had to adapt the game. It seems that golfers are open to such things.
“But I also know how much the fans love those moments — hearing our thought processes, conversations with our caddies, our reactions to the shots, and understanding the ups and downs of competing at the highest level. … While we may (at least I know I do) think it’s not that important or interesting, our fans do.”
