Ludvig Aberg overcomes illness to claim victory at Genesis Invitational

Ludvig Aberg surprised the golf public by winning the Genesis Invitational tournament. The 25-year-old golfer arrived at the tournament visibly tired, exhausted from a mysterious illness that had caused him problems in the previous weeks. However, that didn’t stop him from winning his second title on the PGA Tour, with 12 shots under par.

Three consecutive birdies on 13, 14 and 15, as well as the final move on 18 were enough for the Swede to make an impressive feat.

Although his opponent McNealy looked dangerous and was on the verge of celebrating, the 25-year-old stopped him. Aberg shared his emotions after the victory, saying that hitting 12 for par was the reason why he was celebrating.

“Big putt on 12 for par,” Åberg said as quoted by Macon

“I think if I hadn’t made that one, I don’t think I would have won today. Knowing that 13 is a reachable par-5 and sort of struggled with the tee shot on 14 yesterday, it was nice to hit a nice draw in the fairway and top it off with a couple of birdies as well coming in.”

Tiger Woods comparison

Golf experts immediately made a comparison between his 18th hole putt and Tiger Woods’ victory in 2008. In an interview with the media, Aberg shared that there are similarities.

“I guess his [Woods’] was a little bit longer, but it was a similar line. That’s pretty cool.”

Aberg had lost eight pounds in two days a few weeks before, but even that didn’t stop him in his tracks. After completing the second round, he revealed his problems, stressing that everything seemed very serious. Aberg did not know what was happening to him in those moments, but after that he did his best to recover.

Truly, an amazing story.

“It sort of was OK for a couple of days, and then at Pebble, it kind of shifted to like feverish and almost like body aches and shivering. First, I was really hot, then I got really cold.”
