In recent months, almost everyone in the tennis world has expressed their opinion on Jannik Sinner’s doping case.
However, almost no one had speculated that this story would end with an agreement between the world number 1 and WADA for a three-month suspension.
Shortly before the start of the Doha ATP 500, it was announced that the Italian ace would be suspended from February 9 to May 4 and that he could not train in any affiliated facility either in Italy or abroad until April 13.
Although he has suffered a suspension that will force him to miss six tournaments in total, there is no denying that this solution was convenient for the 23-year-old from Sesto Pusteria who risked a much heavier ban of one to two years.
At the same time, WADA has averted the risk that the 3-time Grand Slam champion will be acquitted after such a thorny and delicate case.
Cilic reflects on Sinner’s case
Most players and insiders were not happy to hear this news, believing that Sinner has enjoyed privileged treatment and that the anti-doping system does not work as it should.
During his latest press conference in Dubai, 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic – who recently returned to competition after a serious knee injury – was asked about this topic.
“I didn’t know that it was possible to reach an agreement with WADA, especially when there was so little time left before the hearing before the CAS in Lausanne” – admitted the Croatian veteran. “I am very happy for Jannik because – although he has suffered a suspension – he can definitively put this case behind him and return to play with a free mind.
I have always believed his version of the facts. I have known him for many years, he is an exceptional boy and has always had the stigmata of the predestined since he was a child.
However, I cannot deny that its agreement with WADA raises several questions, which have not been answered yet,” he concluded.
