Martina Navratilova comments on Iga Swiatek’s outbursts, title drought

Martina Navratilova thinks Iga Swiatek figuring out how to handle better her emotions in moments of frustration and also keeping a positive mindset despite evidently struggling with her confidence is the key to the Pole ending her title drought.

While the world No. 2 has made the semifinal in three of her four tournaments played this year, she remains without a final in 2025 and without a trophy since the 2024 French Open. And after her latest semifinal defeat in Indian Wells to Mirra Andreeva, it is becoming more apparent that the five-time Grand Slam champion has started to deal with some kind of mental block in the latter stages of tournaments.

But this time, Swiatek’s loss fell into the second plan as the Pole lashing out at her team and nearly hitting a ball kid in a moment of frustration drew more attention. It was not the sole instance of the 23-year-old losing her composure this year as that was also the case during the Middle East swing.

Navratilova on Swiatek losing her composure multiple times in 2025, not winning a title in nearly a year

“She showed moments of frustration and directed some of it toward her team. While it’s unclear what was being said, she’ll need to manage those emotions better, as she can be highly agitated at times,” the former 18-time Grand Slam champion told the WTA website.

“She seems to be struggling with confidence, which can lead to frustration when things don’t go her way. Her game is still there, but maintaining a positive mindset will be key. But let’s not forget, she has been the most successful player overall for the past few years and has won this event.”

A couple of days, Swiatek penned an emotional letter, in which she admitted that some of the things she went through over the last couple of months left a toll on her. However, she admitted her actions in Indian Wells were wrong.

After getting that off her chest, Swiatek will try to end her title drought at the Miami Open, where she had one winning run in 2022.
